Organisation

Cineville thinks going to the movies should be easy, fun and affordable – for everyone. We want to celebrate independent cinema in all its forms, because we believe it can unite people, ideas and dreams. Our mission? Share our love of film and become the number one community for curious and adventurous film fans.

This is us

Cineville was born in 2009 in Kriterion, an independent student cinema in Amsterdam. With a Cineville card, members can visit over 75 Dutch cinemas as often as they like. More than 100,000 Cinevillers have now joined the club, meaning one in every 180 people in The Netherlands has a card. Nice!

We’ve grown, but our close-knit team of editors, developers, marketeers, and customer service employees is still doing what we love most: making sure Cineville members can catch a film at any time, and know what to see. Our self-built Calendar and App list all showtimes, and our newsletters, social media and magazine zoom in on what’s on, with tips, interviews, background articles and a podcast.

Collaboration is key for Cineville. We’re a network of independent cinemas, each with their own unique locations and curated programming. Watching a film together can be funny, magical, moving and inspiring, which is why Cineville is committed to preserving and promoting these special spaces. The cinemas are reimbursed for each Cineville visit, and members tend to go to the movies much more often than non-members. This way, we all contribute to a full house and a lively, resilient industry.

In the future, we want to support more European independent cinemas and connect film fans internationally. That’s why we already branched out locally to Belgium, Germany, Sweden and Austria (under the name nonstop). Our dream is having a single European membership that can be used across borders. We already made that a temporary reality in the summer of ‘25.

These are our values

At Cineville, we’re driven, curious, and supportive. Integrity is our cornerstone, and we try to stay open to each other's ideas and beliefs. We put humanity, transparency and quality front and centre. And we’re always happy to hear from our members and partners, because we want to keep learning.

We believe in celebrating and encouraging individuality and diversity. Our office should make everyone feel at home. Please, come as you are. Film is for everyone – so Cineville is too.

When director Sean Baker won an Oscar in 2025, he said: ‘In a time in which the world can feel very divided, [going to the cinema] is more important than ever. It's a communal experience you simply don't get at home.’ Amen, Sean, amen.
