Last month, Sophy Romvari’s *Blue Heron* landed in independent cinemas, in May, Cristian Mungiu’s *Fjord* won the Palme d'Or in Cannes, and now, at the Cineville Preview Days, it’s time for Marijna Jankovic’s feature debut *Home*. A wave of films about migrant families leaving Eastern Europe for the promised land of the West: from Hungary to Canada, from Romania to Norway, and with *Home*, from the former Yugoslavia to Denmark. All these films explore a universal, friction-filled question: does moving to a new country and culture bring new opportunities, or do you lose your grip on who you are along the way?

Director Tereza Nvotová (*Nightsiren*) confessed at the recent Venice Film Festival, where *Father* premiered, that she didn't want to make this film at all. But the real-life stories about forgotten baby syndrome kept playing in her mind. Wondering if this could also happen to her, Nvotová decided to take on the project. Inspired by the observant style of Gus Van Sant’s *Elephant*, she made *Father*, a deeply moving film about a father who forgets his child in a car.

Following family drama *Leila's Brothers* (which won the FIPRESCI prize at Cannes in 2022), Iranian director Saeed Roustaee is back with *Woman and Child*. His latest premiered in the main competition at Cannes 2025 alongside fellow countryman and Palme d'Or winner Jafar Panahi. Given the scarcity of Iranian cinema at the recent Cannes festival, we’re extra proud to be able to show Roustaee’s film during the Cineville Preview Days.

Finally recovered from the body-horror vibes of *The Substance*? Good, because director Natalie Erika James is ready to feed you *Saccharine*. Her film premiered at the recent Berlinale, where audiences left the cinema crying 'gross, fucked up, weird' and... 'hot' – [according to this review on Letterboxd](https://letterboxd.com/veradrew22/film/saccharine-2026/). Naturally, we couldn't pass up such a wonderfully freaky horror film during the Cineville Preview Days.

Documentary filmmaker Luuk Bouwman (*The Propagandist*, *Gerlach*) is back with a portrait of psychosis that’s both powerful and insightful. In *The Desert of the Real*, he takes us into the inner world of six people who lived through psychosis. The title refers to *The Matrix*, in which tech-hero Neo awakens from a simulated world and is welcomed to 'the desert of the real'. The film premiered at IDFA 2025, where it instantly became a major audience favourite. We’ve been longing to see it on Cineville screens since then, so catch it during the Cineville Preview Days!

In 2016, Belgian filmmaker Pieter-Jan de Peu made *The Land of the Enlightened*, about child soldiers in Afghanistan. This time he portrays Ukraine, travelling to the front line to closely follow survivors in the town of Mariinka. The film premiered at IDFA last year, where it was showered with rave reviews. *Mariinka* does not look away from the war, bringing the humanity of those left behind into sharp focus.
