Marie-Lou, director of a Paris care home, tries to break with convention through an innovative care method. She meets fierce resistance from her team, who consider putting the residents' wishes and dignity entirely front and centre unworkable.

Marie-Lou's life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Mari, a Japanese theatre director fighting cancer. As a close friendship develops between the two women, they join forces in a struggle to make the impossible possible.

Sitting still for 196 minutes sounds long, but think of _All of a Sudden_ as one of those delightful mental health walks, right inside the cinema. Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi (_Drive My Car_) takes his sweet time, and before you know it, so do you. In a world where everyone is running, rushing, and pushing on, his latest film is an (unbelievably) patient, welcome breath of fresh air. Hamaguchi loosely based the story on the correspondence between two academic pen pals who wrote to each other about philosophy, anthropology, capitalism, and approaching death. He cast Virginie Efira as Marie-Lou, a French care director trying to introduce the patience-based Humanitude method in her care home, and Tao Okamoto became Mari, a terminally ill theatre maker from Japan. Marie-Lou and Mari meet by chance in Paris and, though seemingly worlds apart, feel like kindred spirits from day one. And then off they walk. During their long strolls they talk about life – and how _all of a sudden_ it can just be over. The richer their conversations, the grander the small things around them feel, slowing you down as a viewer too. _All of a Sudden_ is the kind of film that quietly helps you catch your breath again. Every rushed, breathless gasp turns into a liberating deep sigh: Haaaaaaah… maguchi.

Think of this film as a long mental health walk: afterwards, the world all of a sudden feels a bit lighter.

As fifty-somethings and drinking buddies Carlobianchi and Doriano wait for a friend returning from Argentina, they embark on a booze-fueled road trip through the Italian countryside with a young student.  

One of the big discoveries in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes 2025, and the absolute festival favourite of Cineville editor Jesse.  Italian director Francesco Sossai’s *Andiamo a bere l’ultima –* 'let's have one last drink' – perfectly captures that specific atmosphere of the late hours in the day, when alcohol loosens the tongue and you start dreaming big. Shot on grainy 16mm, this film feels like an Italian summer evening in your favourite cinema during the Preview Days.

I wouldn't actually want to join two tipsy Italians on a pub crawl, but on film it's a wonderfully inspiring adventure.

Then they make the mistake of their lives by picking up a deranged hitchhiker. It's the beginning of a nightmare starring a family of cannibals and an ever-roaring chainsaw.

'Most horrifying film of all time.' 'A sickening, repulsive and tasteless piece of work', read the reactions upon the release of _The Texas Chainsaw Massacre_ in 1974. Soon, however, the independently shot and produced film transcended its cult status: Tobe Hooper's spine-chilling nightmare grew into a classic.

Hooper, who passed away at the age of 74, loosely based the film on the life story of deranged killer Ed Gein, who had the nasty habit of skinning his victims and fashioning their skin into masks and drums.

On the rooftops of Tel Aviv, far from the war zone, Israeli soldiers hold secret late-night conversations. Step by step, it reveals how the military and intelligence services determine who is a target, which technologies and procedures are deployed, and how many civilian casualties an attack is allowed to cost. Tens, sometimes hundreds of Palestinian civilians can be deemed an acceptable price for taking out a single target. _Naza_ thus poses the painful question: how can the killing of innocent civilians become so normalised within a military machine that it's no longer seen as a moral or legal problem?

The title refers to Nezek Agavi, 'collateral damage', the Israeli military term for the expected number of civilian casualties in an airstrike. The term symbolises the dehumanisation baked deep into the system: civilian deaths aren't a tragic side-effect, but a foreseen and accepted part of military operations.

_Naza_, by filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor (_No Other Land_), premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize.
