In China's remote Liangshan Mountains, 14-year-old Qihuo sets off with her two best friends in search of a skirt for her traditional rite of passage. She's just had her first period, and the traditional Changing Skirt ceremony marks her transition into adulthood, along with all the expectations of marriage and labour that come with it.
The three girls trek through the rugged mountains, far away from the adult world. Blurring the line between documentary and fiction, Whispers in May paints a portrait of friendship, freedom and growing up, as the final moments of childhood give way to the adult world.
