Uyariy (Quechua for 'to listen') is a Peruvian-Spanish documentary about the Juliaca Massacre of 9 January 2023, which took place during the unrest that followed the coup against President Pedro Castillo and Dina Boluarte’s rise to power. The movie is a reflection on memory, truth and justice through the testimonies of victims’ relatives.
In a Peru where the far right is gaining ground, voices that challenge the dominant narrative often struggle to find institutional support. Uyariy was made independently, through community solidarity and self-managed funding, to keep this memory alive. It honours the 50 people killed by state violence, among them women, children and adolescents, and places the massacre within a longer history of mass violence in Peru.
After the screening, director Javier Corcuera will join an online discussion with a family member of one of the victims featured in the film. All proceeds from the evening will go to the victims’ families.
