The Year of the Ghost

In 2022, filmmaker Louis Hothothot returns to China because his father is gravely ill, but mandatory quarantine causes him to miss his death and funeral. Following the loss, the remaining family members each go their separate ways.

Hothothot’s mother moves to the village where her husband is buried, believing his ghost still wanders the area and needs looking after. His sister stays behind in Beijing. A matchmaker, she helps others find love while caught between the expectations placed on her as a daughter and her desire for a family of her own. Meanwhile, Louis wanders Europe and China, facing the question: who’s going to look after his mother now?
