Carl Theodor Dreyer’s expressionist classic on the witch trial of Jeanne d'Arc, the celebrated 'Maid of Orléans' (Maria Falconetti).
The Danish filmmaker (1889–1968) was renowned for his perfectionism and penchant for foreboding psychological drama rendered in stark black-and-white contrasts. Reflecting on his portrayal of Jeanne d'Arc (1412–1431), whose life ended at the stake, Dreyer noted: 'I wanted to reveal the soul behind the façade of the human face.'
