Two documentaries by Ulrich Seidl, shot for television in the nineties in his signature style. The 'ordinary man' takes the stage. But is that ordinary Austrian really so ordinary?

In Bilder einer Ausstellung (1996), exhibition-goers talk unabashedly about their relationship with modern and contemporary art, in a tone that departs radically from the impenetrable and often hilarious jargon of the art world ('international art speak'). Seidl is primarily interested in what art means emotionally to the layperson.

Der Busenfreund (1997) seems like one of the most absurd films in Seidl's repertoire. Facing the camera is maths teacher René Rupnik (first seen in Bilder einer Ausstellung), who speaks freely about his fascination with Viennese actress Senta Berger and his obsession with large breasts, with Rupnik's possessive mother playing a far from minor role in the story.
