The year in film
There’s no place like home, but wasn’t it great to spend an entire year visiting others? A flash of our Cineville card unlocked every portal. We stayed in sticky-hot Mexican bars and blue-tinged Mumbai apartments, slipped between the sheets in New York penthouses, and got lost in the memories of a messy Australian snail shell.
We saw grand designs come to life, buildings under construction and homes that were violently demolished (and rebuilt, and violently demolished again). The most unexpected places — a love hotel, a juke joint, a hazy dance floor — suddenly felt like our own. Sometimes, home was simply where your people were. But not everyone looking for a place to stay, managed to find one.
As some searched for a roof over their head, others were searching for themselves. Yearning for a new identity, a new body, a new person to beckon inside. Home is where the heart is, after all. And if the walls came closing in, there was always the outdoors. Up North, into the woods, or back to the place that was once your shelter. And afterwards? We’d be back in our comfortable seats, in front of the big screen. Lights on, ready to head home.
