The Killer Inside Me vertelt het verhaal van de bedrieglijk charmante en bescheiden Lou Ford (Casey Affleck), sheriff van een klein Amerikaans stadje. Lou heeft veel problemen. Met vrouwen, met de wet en met een gigantisch aantal moorden in zijn Texaanse jurisdictie.

Daarnaast is hij een sadistische, psychopathische moordenaar. Steeds meer aanwijzingen beginnen zijn kant op te wijzen en hij heeft vrijwel alle mogelijke alibi’s al gebruikt.

In de gitzwarte, barbaarse wereld van Jim Thompson is echter niets wat het lijkt: niet alleen Lou, maar alle personen die zich met de moorden bezighouden blijken een eigen geheim met zich mee te dragen.

There is something gruesome and yet captivating about the way the character's mind works, turning this film into an emotional roller coaster. "The Killer Inside Me" is quite violent, not because it's bloody or too graphic with its scenes; in fact, the worst depiction of violence is in the mind of the viewer who feels compelled to try and understand such a behavior and that, honestly speaking, is very painful. The victims suffer the atrocity of physical pain while the viewer lives on to see the outcome of a well planned, but not perfect, murder that leaves its marks wherever it goes.

Casey Affleck is very convincing as a man with a disturbed personality, although his strong accent and fast, almost indiscernible, speech don't go too far from his character in "The Assassination of Jesse James by Coward Robert Ford". He's got a talent, but he needs to concentrate on the character's persona instead of his own. People don't talk and act the same, so that should be something for Affleck to think about. Nonetheless, "The Killer Inside Me" is a good film, despite its likeness to many of the genre. ★★★
